It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Professor Shigeru Itoh, a distinguished scholar and researcher, on August 30th, 2023, just a week before the last ESHP 2023 symposium in the series he created. Professor Itoh devoted his life to the pursuit of knowledge and innovation in various fields, leaving an incredible mark on academia and the scientific community.

Professor Itoh’s academic journey was marked by exceptional achievements. He received his Doctoral Degree from Kyushu University in 1971, marking the beginning of a remarkable career. Throughout his illustrious career, he held several prominent positions, including serving as the Director of the Shock-Wave and Condensed Matter Research Center at Kumamoto University. Later, he assumed the esteemed role of President at the National Institute of Technology, Okinawa College. He also held the honorary title of Professor Emeritus at both institutions, a testament to his enduring impact.

In addition to his leadership roles, Professor Itoh played pivotal roles in various academic and professional organizations. He served as an executive board member of the Japan Explosive Society and contributed significantly to its mission. His dedication and expertise were duly recognized when he received the Best Paper Award from the Japan Explosive Society, the Japan Society for Technology of Plasticity, and the Pressure Vessels and Piping Division of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers in 2005, among numerous other accolades.

Professor Itoh’s research pursuits were both diverse and groundbreaking. He conducted pioneering investigations into underwater shock waves, exploring their myriad applications. However, it was his unique research in the realm of food processing that captured the imagination of many. Notably, his experiments with underwater shock waves resulted in the creation of the famous “apple juice,” a testament to his innovative spirit.

Perhaps his most enduring legacy is the establishment of the ESHP series in 2004, a platform aimed at fostering global academic exchanges. Through this initiative, Professor Itoh sought to bridge international boundaries and promote collaboration among scholars worldwide.
